Lackawanna mother's home flooded

When a water main burst just down the street from her home Sunday, a Lackawanna's mother's home was flooded.

Renee Stampone spent that day pumping and cleaning out her basement.

"I spent thirteen-hours yesterday cleaning with friends and family…spending money trying to get the water out of my basement," Stampone said.

She said it took over two hours Sunday for the Erie County Water Authority to turn off the water gushing out of the broken main nearby.

During that time, water flooded down the streets, into her yard, and eventually into her basement, where Sunday afternoon a row of appliances sat unplugged.

Stampone waited for a claims adjuster from her homeowners insurance company Monday afternoon.

But Victor Rutecki, who has 35-years of experience in the insurance industry, says there is one thing homeowner policies usually do not cover.

"Flood is always excluded," Rutecki said. "A homeowner has the option of purchasing a flood policy through the National Flood Insurance program, but typically, all homeowners policies exclude flood."
